The biggest killer is rust; check the birdcage and body mount areas. These are 40 year old cars, so worn out suspensions and leaking brakes, electrical gremlins and Bubba's work are all things to look at. It all adds up quick, so you are better off getting the cleanest and most complete car you can find. Paint is probably the most expensive repair - $5-10K. Don't get in a hurry during your search -- now is a good time to buy with the economy down. Spend as much time as you can here of CF to learn all the issues. Most are very common but easily repaired if you have basic mechanical skill, time and are willing to learn. If you are having the work done by mechanic, be prepared to spend $$$. You looking for a project car or a daily driver? Most of these cars are not investments, but can be money pits and you'll never get what you put into them . . . but they are fun and will get a lot of attention when you're out driving.

Are you asking for problems to look for when buying or driving/maintenance issues?

I've run across many nice looking Vettes that have very bad frames, floorboards, windshield rot. If it needs paint, plan on spending more on the car than you will ever recoup. Expensive and common mechanical problems include brakes & suspension. Get an Eklers catalog to help you id the cost of items like carpeting or brakes or whatever. Be realistic about repairing safety items before cosmetic items. 68's cost more to restore due to unique features. 75-77 are cheapest and most common. Also poorest performers. Don't expect any of these Vettes to out-run most newer cars. All that said, everyone here loves their Vettes, including myself.

Good luck

The 68s and 77s are not Stingrays. This will help:
