When GM provides the vin's for the cars. Is it in order for a specific model? Or what ever rolls out on the line. For exp, Chevy nova's are there vins in order or could they be in with the vettes? 429671 then 429672.
Central Office GM does not provide VINs other than the stated policy of the consecutive unit number of first build of each new model year will be 1. GM Central Office specifies the format of the VIN and the identifying information it will contain for each division and vehicle type. The VIN of my 68 is 194678S416660. GM HQ specified the 194678S4 portion of the VIN. All 68 Corvettes shared this format with the exception of the body code (37 for coupes, 67 for convertibles - but even that stipulation came from GM). 16660 is the consecutive unit number assigned by the plant.
Consecutive unit numbers are assigned and tracked at each assembly plant. Total builds for a period of assembly and the VINs used were sent from the plants to GM in Detroit. This was usually weekly for Corvettes.
At the plant, consecutive unit numbers were assigned in order. Corvettes were usually assembled in order, but there are exceptions.
