I am about ready to start with my enging and drivetrain overhaul and wanted to know what shop equipment I might need. I already have the normal stuff (compressor, blast cabinet, jacks and stands) but didn't know if there was anything else that might come in handy.
I know that I need an engine stand, any recommendations on this? I am also looking at buying a good quality tap/die set. I am going to see if I can borrow an engine hoist when the time comes to pull the engine as it won't get used again.
I an also debating on where to start. I have thought about starting at the rear of the car (trailing arms, diff, spring) and working my way forward but not sure. Any suggestions on this?
You'll need a sawzall to cut the TA bolts. Also an air hammer, chissel (SP?), a wire wheel brush for surface rust removal. Do you paln to rebuild the diff? There's special tools for measurement. Also a press for bearing removal/installation. There's a bunch of tools for the rear spindle/bearing removal also most vendors sell. I'm sure there's more you'll need and others will chime in.
Good luck & have fun.

I am going to send out my Diff and TAs for the rebuild. I will just have to remove and replace them.
Anyone know a good engine stand to purchase that is sturdy? I am thinking of one that is gear driven to allow for easy rotation. The engine will probably be on the stand for a few months before it is completed as I will do a little at a time.
As far as the engine hoist goes if you can't borrow one check your local rental shop. I have rented from Taylor and uhaul before buying mine. Good luck with the project.
I use harbor frieght engines stands. They are good for the price you pay. I always get the 4 wheel 1000 lb stands. You will also need a variety of other tools like: torque wrenchs (3/8 and 1/2 inch maybe an in-lb wrench in 1/4 as well), dial caliper, feeler gauges, valve spring tool, and oil pump primer to name a few. It really depends on how in detail your rebuild/overhaul is. I am constantly adding tools to my garage and already have a lot.
Harbor freight folding engine stand is a good one. A cherry picker is also needed. My cherry picker also has legs that fold up. You will also need/want a load leveler for pulling and replacing the engine.
