New model year debuts were usually about the 3rd or 4th week of August and it was usually an exciting time to see and smell all the new cars in the showroom! I was a teenager when the new 68's came out, Think I bruised my chin from my jaw dropping to the floor!!
My dad bought a new 68 Plymouth that year and I remember sitting in a 68 GTX in the showroom. half the fun was going to all the dealers road testing new cars and looking around the showrooms.
68-71 from all makers had some of the best designs ever!
I couldn't tell a Taurus from a Hundai these days
I remeber in 69 when my dad bought a new Plymouth Satelitte. I spent hours in the showroom sitting in the Roadrunners and GTXs. That previous summer our preacher's son just returned from Vietnam and bought one of those new 68 vettes. It was the only thing us teenagers talked about.
I remember! They were introduced in a commercial at the end of the show "Bewitched." (Chevy was their sponsor) The commercial starred the shows characters. Larry came in and asked Darin what he was designing; Darin proceeded to show photos of the new lineup. After the vette was shown, that was the talk of us 6th grade boys the next day.
I remember Bewitched, still see the re-runs on TV-Land, lot of neat chevys on there, including vettes
according to the black book, September was the first month where ending serial nuumber was 905, so they made 905 vettes in Sept. so probably started in last week of Sept 67. If I remember right, the first few months were all Convertibles.
I have found a source which says the new 68 was shown to the press in August, 1967. It is not clear whether this "showing" included the blue big block coupe Duntov had by May, 1967 and the one he cut the lower valance panel on to ensure the car ran cool for the long lead press review.
The same source says the new model debut was after the midddle of September, 1967.
The debut could have been as late as October, 1967 since 68 model year production did not begin until September. Total September production was only 905 cars, or a little less than two weeks of average production.
My 68 is build 5th Oct 67, but has a first registration date of beginning of 69 only.
Could be a mistake that happened during the last 40 + years of multiple owner changes.
Or the car was standing in a show room for a year.
Might be one of the debuting showroom models.
I do remember Bonanza episodes when they introduced all the new Chevy models. They would run the whole show without commercials then at the end have about a 5 minute segment to show them all.
