Default 1978 numbers question, please help.

I am looking at a 78 Silver Anniversary.
Where do you look to find the VIN on the engine to match the car?
Did they move it? It is usually infront of the Passenger side head but
I didn't see it there? Any ideas?
Thanks

That's where it's supposed to be. Maybe it got ground off during a rebuild or not the original engine.

That where I thought it was, the older ones have it there.
I will have to have a better look when it gets here.
I was told it was original but with a rebuild.
Thanks guys.

If it was rebuilt, they may have decked the block and ground off the numbers.

If it has a smog pump the pad is obscured by its apparatus so you have to look hard for it.

My 76 was also painted orange over the stamped numbers so once I knew where the l48 pad area was I could see the letters/numbers under........ then a putty knife cleaned it enough to see them.
