i have started to sand my corvette(81) and almost done but noticed the fiberglass sometimes turns black and water leaves spots. i know it collects contaminents and soaks up water. i have it covered because it will take me a few more days to get it done. some water spots sand down but the outline is still there and i cant sand anymore or there will be a gouge, will it be ok to paint over all of this when i shoot primer if i use the oil wipes properly. any suggestions. also shooting 3 coats primer and then sanding it then 3 coats black and 3 coats clear, any tips or suggestions would be great, thanks
I'm not sure what you mean by "turns black." Bare SMC panels should be a gray color.
Try this: clean off an area of your choice, shoot rattle can primer over it, and see if the primer covers your spots. If the spots do not bleed through the cheapo primer, they are not likely to bleed through the good stuff to come later.
It seems as though there are a lot of opinions on how to prep and paint fiberglass. There are several members that hang out in the “paint/ body” section of the forum that are really on top of the subject. You might want to post this question there for more responses.
