The light for you '82 is lit from above - like my '79. Find the source.
Take a small drill bit and twist it into the light to break the feable blue lens. This will allow the bulb to directly light the console. I did this with my first '79 25 years ago , and with my second. Its still 'not blinding' - but it sure beats the hell outta what came from factory.
