Is there a way to determine which dealership sold your Corvette originally? I thought that I read on the forum that this information could be obtained from the NCRS if you become a member. Any truth to this? My car is a 1970 and was probably from the midwest. My best guess is Ohio.
I checked the NCRS website and couldn't find it anywhere. I'm not a member yet. And that's because even though my Corvette is the best it may be since new, I doubt it ranks in the halls in this group.
If I can obtain the information on the original dealer, I'll subscribe just for that information alone.
...Is there a way to determine which dealership sold your Corvette originally?...
Yes and No. Do you have any original paperwork with the car? Car shipper or a copy of the invoice will show the dealer.
...Any truth to this?...
True provided the NCRS has your VIN in their records. Some VINs are missing or the info is illegible. Go here http://www.ncrs.org/ and scroll down about half a click. You will see GM 1962-1975 Delivery Data
Be aware knowing the original dealer may not tell you much. A lot of these dealerships have been out of business for years. Dealerships still in business may or may not have any records left from 1970.
Thanks for the replies. I don't have the tank sticker. The prior owner found it crumbling to dust when he replaced the original tank. The Wisconsin title stated that the car was previously titled in Ohio.
So, it's going to cost me $75 to find out where the car was sold. Maybe.... $35 for NCRS, and the remainder for document fees.
The prior owner bought the car from a woman that had owned it for a very long time, and had her information included with his receipts from over the years. If all else fails, I may try to contact her for more information.
Maybe I'll get lucky in contacting her and find out she bought it new...
Some say they have found tank stickers in between the tach and speedo. Have you pulled the seats and carpet in the back, sometimes you can find bits of info.
i was fortunate to have dealt with the company that GM originally authorized to handle all the st louis documentation before the NCRS got involved. back then you could get the info free of charge in the beginning and after the word got out and they were inundated with requests, they instituted a small charge ($25.00) for the documentation if they had it. i was able to get mine early on, and it does in fact show the dealer where the car was delivered in addition to all of the information contained on the window sticker as far as options, etc and their costs including the retail pricing. it was from that documentation that i was able to determine that my car (78 pace car fully loaded with all the goodies in the pace car package) was also equipped with gymkhana suspension and a cassette radio (the only other options were engine upgrade to L82 and transmission to 4 speed and an 8 track or CB radio choice) it came with everything else as standard in the package.

I had one of the free info packages for my 79. I don't remember how far back the records went but I think the cutoff date was something like 75 or later. Nothing available for late 60's or early 70's.
Well I found the bill of sale that the prior owner received when he bought my car. But the success pretty much stops there. It had the VIN, the price paid ($7000 in 1998), and the former owner's name. But there is no address or phone number. So, more digging. Luckily the name isn't too common, so I can use a free people search program to maybe find a telephone number.
I have been under the dash before, and didn't notice any documents. But I'm going to search again. I could easily have missed it. I may also look behind the kick panels. I've heard of them being there too.

The NCRS has shipping data only for most cars up to 1974 and has no connection or conflict with what is available for later ('77 an up) cars through another GM contractor.

You're talking about Allied-Vaughn. GM contracted with Allied-Vaughn to put the GM copies of dealer invoices on microfiche. This included St. Louis but was not limited to only St. Louis. The Allied-Vaughn records include most, but not all, 1977-81 Corvettes.
The Allied-Vaughn database is not what is being offered by the NCRS. Different stuff; different sources of data.
I agree with you; if Allied-Vaughn has a copy of your dealer invoice in their records, you can get much more information from the invoice than only dealer, dealer code, and a date.
Just the same, for some folks, the information available from the NCRS is all the information they have for their cars.

mike, thanks. i just couldn't remember the name of the outfit that GM initially contracted with. i was pretty sure however that the information that they had (while incomplete somewhat) spanned a greater number of C3 years, but that was a while ago and at my age, just remembering something happened is an accomplishment, lol!!

If the former owner's last name is Crotty I may be able to help.
No, it isn't Crotty. But thanks. Sandra Warnell. I'm guessing she lives somewhere near green Bay Wisconsin. I believe she brought it with her during a move from Ohio. I have checked the 1970 corvette registry. The prior owner had posted the car on there. I have since changed it. Any other corvette registrys out there? It's a long shot though. The guy I bought it from bought it in 1998.
This isn't a big deal for me. I would really just like to know which dealer sold it new. I'm just not certain that information is going to be worth $75 to me to find out.
