I have an NOS magnesium water pump...................for a big block Chevy. It was manufactured by Horstman (embossed on pump housing), but not dated anywhere. There is no hole on top for a by pass hose like a stock BB pump. Since it's magnesium and since BB Chevys didn't appear until 1965................I'm wondering if this could have been for a race application (Can Am?). Does anyone know anything about Horstman or these mag H2O pumps? And yes, I know mag doesn't like water.
Wow, I just did a google search for magnesium chevy water pump, and it looks like you are going to have to hire a detective or something. This thread came up as the first hit!

How much does it weigh? I'm just curious about the weight difference compared to an aluminum pump, given all the extra effort to cast it for a low volume application.

Checked it on a conventional dial type bathroom scale (probably not real accurate), ..........mag pump weighs 2 lbs vs. 4 lbs for current GM BB alum pump. Not a lot of weight savings. I was just wondering if some of the Can Am teams might have used the mag pumps.
There's a online forum called the H.A.M.B. (Hokey *** Message Board). Sorry I don't have the link, but you should be able to find it with a search.
Don't let the name fool you... Some of the sharpest rodders and racers I've ever run into frequent that board. They've answered some really obscure questions on parts and people for me over the years. I wouldn't be surprised if you were able to answer your questions there too.
I just spoke with Horstman Mfg in California. The gentleman I spoke with was adamant that they manufacture ONLY go kart components, clutches etc................................
Looks like this water pump created itself and was born with the name HORSTMAN "self embossed" on it.........................
Spoke with Frank, a 25 year employee at Moroso, this afternoon and he says Moroso did not acquire Horstman.....................and he had never heard of a magnesium water pump ...........
