Default A6 A/C Compressor question

I just bought a NOS A6 compressor for my C3 and the pulley on the clutch spins freely in both directions. Is it supposed to do this? or was I sold a bad compressor? If it spins freely, how will it engage to turn the compressor?

Thanks!

Yes, the pulley is supposed to spin freely in both directions. The electro-magnetic clutch pulls the disc that's keyed to the shaft up against the pulley to start the compressor turning. Grab the outer most part of the assembly and turn it by hand, to make sure it still turns and to help prevent the seals from taking a set.
