Default Whats the best way to upgrade stereo in C3

Hi, I have a 1979 C3 and want to upgrade the stereo, I got one of those retro stereo's from Ecklers and wondered what the best method would be, it looks like the allen head panel screws are rounded on the dash but I can get behind the OEM radio from the side console panel but there is not enough space to back it out, the heater duct is in the way, however the new radio is half the size and would fit right in. I'm hoping some other people have done this and have some advice, Thanks Guys-JSP

I think you are going to have to remove the shifter console plate and the gauge cluster to get enough room to remove the radio.

Those Allen head screws are cosmetic not functional. Have a close look; they are part of the plastic molding. To get the radio out remove the gauge bezel.

There are 2 screws above the gauges, one on each side and then you have to remove the carpet on the sides of the tranny tunnel so you can get to the 2 screws on the bottom from the inside. It is very easy to put in a new radio. Put some new 4X6 speakers in the dash and kick panels, a couple of new 6X9 in the rear and you will enjoy the new tunes. Amp helps also. Paul 74 is correct, just cosmetic.

Yellow arrows show where the six screws need to be removed from the bezel. You need to remove the center column side panels to access the two screws at the bottom corners that hold the bottom console bezel to the gauge bezel.

See article at http://www.californiastingrays.us/Ar...tts/Radio.html

Would really like to do something like this for my '71 vert, but with the top down? Still trying to come up with something. Will consider all suggestions!

That is awesome looking and very clean. Two questions, are you using an amp for the sub and speakers and if so where is it located?

I also have polk speakers in the headrests of my seats, so total I have the two dash speakers, 4 speakers in the headrests, and the 2 boston in the rear along with the sub in the rear. There are two amps in the jack compartment (hope I dont get a flat, but I got AAA)

Hi Guys I want to Thank You all for the help, with "yellow 1980's" diagram I was all set and was able to get the gauge cluster out and the radio lifted out without a problem, of course after seeing "dmeesq's" speakers guess what my next project is? along this line does anyone know what the 3rd wire in the power connector is for? there is the switched power, ground and? I was hoping it was constant power but no luck, and does the dash speaker grills come out from the top to replace those tired OEM speakers? Thanks again. -JSP2242
