New car advertising material is published months in advance of new model introduction dates in order to get the printed material to the dealers. Pick any particular model year and you are likely to find items or statements in the sales material which never made production or which were advertised but not available until later in the production run.
I have a 68; it is not a Stingray. I have an 80; it is not a Stingray. I had a 74 coupe, it was a Stingray. All three are C3s; all three are Corvettes.

I find it all a little confusing. Is it a corvette ? Is it a shark ? Is it a sting ray ? Is it a stingray ? Is it a large mouth bass ? I dunno ? Definitely not an octopuss but it does have a v8.....
I just guess I am saying it seems a little funny it was designed after a shark but is called a sting ray. And what is a C3 ? Wasn't it a third generation ? Sounds like a more accurate moniker than C3. None of it makes much sense to me. Mine is simply a 73 corvette for those who ask....

It's a good thing that they have "corvette" stamped on them somewhere otherwise there would be those out there that would argue that I have a 'XX and it isn't a corvette.
What happened if a worker forgot to put the emblem on a car that came out that year, would it not be a stingray?

Well ya know it's all about the Emblems! If it doesn't say it on it...Then it ISN'T IT!!!
Why else do you think they put all those stickers and stuff on those tuners besides to make them go faster! They have to make sure everyone knows it is what it is because if it doesn't say it than it isn't...

to the people that know the history of Corvettes there is a purist point of view but to the stupids of the world that know didly about the Corvette if you mention that the C3 you own is the "Stingray" type , they know , at least the body shape , of the Corvette you are describing...
so , if you looked to the top of a hill, on a dark , moonlite night & saw a Corvette from 68-82, i would say it was a "Stingray" lol
Pete.

If someone came up and asks if it's a stingray. You can bet that he is just trying to sound knowledgeable and wants to talk about your fine car.
Why start the conversation with a lecture, when I doubt the asker really cares?
Its funny really how many misconceptions are out there really,
Hmmm, I may start a new thread

I have a 1976 Corvette Stingray. I like the name a lot and I wouldn't have bought a `77 and up C3 because they aren't badged as Stingrays (no offense whatsoever intended to the applicable owners, it's just a personal preference). Doesn't matter if somebody doesn't think 'Stingray' is a proper term to distinguish between Corvettes. It's not up to you. GM already decided the matter by putting the badges on the cars. There's no rule that says a vehicle has to have a unique option package or any other differences to have a unique name. Car makers can do whatever the heck they want in that regard. Would have been much better if they'd called the 77 models Stingrays too if only to make a distinction between the sugar scoops and the glassbacks but they didn't.
Btw, I've never seen a 'mako' or 'shark' badge on a production Corvette. Did they ever do that?

That's the way I see it too. I think of all C3's as Stingrays, but in reality, I never use the term. I've had people see the Stingray badge on the fender and comment "Oh, it's a STINGRAY!!!"
