1980 vette the brake pedal will sometimes go to the floor when sitting at a stop light. It will be fine for a while but if I brake for longer it feels like I'm losing the pedal. Sort of feels low on fluid but I topped it of yesterday which didn't seem to help
Make sure you are not loosing brake fluid, if there's no sign of leaking fluid, replace the master cyl. cheap and quick to do , then a good bleed , you can also re-build the master , the kit is about $25, but a reman master is about $30 on the Canadian side, Ron
I got mine from Wilcox part #28978 takes about an hour to do removhttp://www.capitalcorvetteclub.ca/index.php/rons-tidbits/151-rebuilding-a-c3-master-cylinder
al -disassembly to install
Go here I just wrote an article on this,Ron
it's up to you, but i would suggest replacement. what you have happening assuming you don't find a spot where the system is leaking is fluid by pass. the seal on the piston is shot and the fluid is seeping around it as you apply continued pressure to it. if you choose to rebuild, be sure to replace all the seals and gaskets and make certain that the piston and internal parts are still structurally sound.
I just stopped at auto zone they want $52 for a new master cylinder, $20 for re manufactured, $28 for rebuild kit so I think I'm just going to go with re manufactured
If you look under the master cyl. you might see evidence of a little leak or it could be leaking on the inside going into the booster if you have power brakes. Either way not a hard fix for the master cyl. but the booster is a PIA to get unbolted from under the dash and takes about 11/2 hrs to put back on. On our 71' just replaced the booster from O'Reilly's lifetime warrenty for only 90 bucks. We had already replaced all the rest with stainless and silcone brake fluid from Muskeegon so now set till I die!

I've been buying the reman, removing the guts and installing in the original cylinders, works great. Then return the reman as a core.
