Default Limp outside mirror

Hey All!! The driver side mirror on my 74 is sloppy, and goes limp when driving. (no Viagra jokes)

Is there a trick to "tighten it up", or am I buying a new mirror?

Have the same issue.I think that possibly a small smear of epoxy towards the back edge of the ball (where hopefully it won't show) might take up some slack and work for awhile. I haven't tried it yet, and nothing to loose.

I screwed around with JB weld for a long time before I finally got around to fixing mine right....the second somebody would clip the mirror the JB would fall off and it was back to square one again. The RIGHT way to do it is remove the mirror then submerge the head in lacquer thinner overnight. After that you can gently pry the glass off with a butter knife or similar prying instrument. Once you've done that you can see the little spring clip that puts the tension on the adjusting ball. Bend it to get the amount of tension you need to hold the mirror head in. After that you can clean off all the old adhesive and re-glue the glass (I used black RTV). Better than new!

I used the lacquer thinner trick too but my results sucked. After almost 2 days of soaking the mirror head, the attach points behind mirror were still firm. Mine used silicone sealer and they didn't dissolve in the thinner. ?

Drained, wiped clean and re-submerged in a small batch of gasoline. For safety, I bought a super cheap set of disposable, small, bread-baking foil tins at wally world; just enough gas to cover the mirror head, face down. Didn't need excess fuel vapors around anything that sparked. Hardly used a pint.

After 24 hours, the glass almost fell out when picking it up out of solution. No tools needed to peel off. Cleaned off and made the spring fix.

Reassembled with black RTV, let set another 24 hrs, remounted to car and viola! No more sagging mirror.

FWIW: you could order a new mirror, have it delivered, install it, and be driving in less time than it will take to try to tighten the old ball behind the mirror glass.

Mine used to droop >100mph so I lived with it. Now it seems like it gets blown droopy at around 85mph so i may have to deal with it.

This is how I fixed mine. You need to get inside the mirrors to fix them properly. I had to replace on mirror. Aside from that, cost about 50 cents to fix.

This worked for me on drivers side. On pass was unable to get a washer under rhe rivets so gently peened them to tighten up then JB Weld.

Replacement mirrors are good quality and cost $39. I tried the various fixes with little success.
