A previous owner has repaired the rear of my 70 which had been wrecked. When doing so, he did not redrill the holes to include the C O R V E T T E emblems. it looks nice solid and painted, but I want it to look original. I have seen in another post people requesting stencils to drill the holes to attach the letters. Being VERY leary about drilling through a painted rear, I read that one poster recommended popping the studs off with a side grinder and using emblem adhesive or double sided emblem tape to glue the letters on. This seems much less intrusive to me than drilling 16 holes in the back of my car. Has anyone else done this? Did it come out as you hoped? which method of affixing (glue or tape) did you use? Any tips or things that i need to look out for? Any help appreciated. I have my letters in hand, and plan to attempt this in a week or two. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Look on the inside of the rear. You may be able to see where the original holes were and redrill that way. I would not personally use emblem tape because the letters are so small, you may not get good adhesion with such a small surface area w/o the tape showing on the edges.
After finding MANY bubbafications on my car, I've vowed to do it right. It takes more time, but in the end it'll be right.
I don't see why 3M trim tape wouldn't work, that's what I used for the letters on my C5 and they have been there for 7 years now. Letter size could be an issue.

i have done this as repairs using 3m weather strip adhesive.....mark it out with blue delicate tape so the spacing is perfect and go for it.....i hold it down for a moment then use blue tape to keep it on and carefully remove the tape the next day.
Another vote for using double faced emblem tape. While maybe not NCRS, what most manufactures went with from the mid 70's up. Sure beats drilling holes in your nice new body work, and you'll be needing barrel nut clip fastener's for the old way. If going double face, just tape the emblem first, and trim around with an Exacto knife. On the other hand, if NCRS, you'll be killing the value of your emblems.
Do you know if there is a thin double sided emblem tape on the market? I went to autozone this morning and the only one they had was pretty thick and I would guess you would be able to see that it is puffed out. All help appreciated!!
My vote is drill. I have seen some pics here with the holes shown. Maybe someone has their letters removed and can trace the hole locations with a ruler in the pic for reference.
This may help in the mean time.

i have been in the same position in the past with mine also. the letters are small and really don't provide really good surface exposure to insure good contact regarless of using panel glue or trim tape. you won't ever be sorry doing it right IMHO.

Go to an auto body, paint supply place. They carry it.
Found some 3M tape that is .030" thick, which is thick enough to adhere to the emblem and the car and (hopefully) not look too puffy. I will start the side grinding of the emblems this weekend and depending on time, have it finished by the 2nd week of July. Lining it up and measuring it out will take the longest. I will post pictures if anyone cares to see how it comes out. I gotta make sure I spell it right so I dont have a C R O V E T T E. :-)

Don't Rush! Before you grind the original letters, you may want to get a set of repros, or find a set on ebay. If the adhesive does not work, drilling the holes may be necessary and you'll be glad you have the originals in tact. Just something to think about.
Good luck.
