Thought I'd ask a quick question regarding a small rip in my 82's driver side charcoal leather seat. I have a small one inch tear near the white threaded stitching. It is parallel to the stitch. I really do not want to replace the whole leather seat but I do want to keep the tear from becoming larger. Any ideas or tips that I could use to repair this tear. Thanks-Pete

I had an auto upholstery shop for a few years. The seat cover can be removed and fixed. If the tear is close enough to the seam, it can be re sewed if there is enough extra material. You may or may not notice it depending on how much it "pulls". and being tighter it will add a little more stress to that area. Another option is to replace the panel that is torn. Often a shop will have scrap pieces that are saved from other jobs. Sometimes it's a good match-sometimes not. The grain/color might be somewhat different,so it can also be dyed (blended). It can also be replaced with a piece of vinyl or pleather if your not as picky-which would be cheaper. Anyway, there are options.
I'm not sure of prices now. In Fl. early 90s it was a often a $50 repair. This is a common repair. It should take an hour or less...especially if you R/R the seat yourself and bring it in.
Just bought a used car that had a burn hole in the leather seat. They fixed it and unless I show you where it is you would never know. Try a local dealer and they can hook you up.

Had this done on my black79. Seam between the bolster and seat surface.
Popped the cushion out and carried it into the shop.
After the repair I swapped it to the passenger side so the slightly tighter seam would be on the inside instead of in the high stress area by the door.
I don't think anyone but me could tell this has been done.
$50 back in 2005.
Thanks for the replies.....I first looked at some of those vinyl/leather repair kits. Got the feeling these would not be the way to go, because the rip, near the stitching, is in a high stress area (Ok spare me the jokes ) and probably would not hold up. I will go the majority's route and find a local repair shop and see what they can do.
Most of the cost is labor. It takes a long time to R & R a seat cover. If you could remove the cover yourself, most upholstery places would stitch in matching leather (replace damaged panel) for less than $100.
