Default A/C Compressor Bolt Problems

Hey Everyone!

My A/C Compressor is fine but the bolt that goes into the belt tension bracket won't tighten correctly. The threading in the hole in the compressor is toast. I noticed that the hole the bolt goes through goes all the way through the compressor though, an there is enough room for a nut if I get a longer bolt.

I'm sure you can see where I'm goin with this... Can I do that???

The belt tension bolt on my 79 with R4 refrigerant never did have threads. It has a long bolt that goes through the compressor with a nut on it.

It's a 78, and as soon as I get to the hardware store my AC compressor will be just like Gazman's

I bought a new compressor for my '79 last year. When installing I found the threads in the newly manufactured compressors are metric and back in '79 everything was SAE, including the bolt. I then bought a metric bolt to match the compressor but it would not fit through the slot in the bracket that is used for belt tensioning. I had to use my good old Dremel to widen the slot.

So to those who are buying new compressors be cautious about the fasteners before you strip out the threads.

R4 is not refrigerant. R4 is the model of the compressor; the small radial type used on all Corvettes beginning during the 76 model year.

The older, longer cylindrical compressers are called A6.

You are absolutely right and I know that. My mistake. Please forgive me.
