I have a 82 crossfire CE, This happened to me several months ago the car just died randomly after about 30 minutes of driving to and from several stores (car was off for 10 min or more during this) it died while making a left turn. It finally started about 15 minutes later. Yesterday almost in the exact spot after going to several stores and the car sitting for 10 minutes it died while i was cruising at 40mph!! I waited 8-10 min and it started righ up like nothing was wrong!!! WHY????
After the first incedent I did a lot of replacing and tuning up here is a list for reference:
Replaced oil pressure sending unit (for fuel pump)
Replaced fuel pump relay
New plugs, wires, cap, coil, rotor, ignition module
No Known vacume leaks, checked and had good vacuum
New inline fuel filter.
The car fires right up, idles great (a little high until O2 warms up) and runs strong.
Can it be the fuel pump itself overheating and shutting off? Is there another fuse or something Im missing here? I cant find anything else on the wiring diagram that would lead me to belaive its anything but a fuel pump issue.
That fuel pump doesn't put out a lot of pressure any way. If you are going to change it read up on crossfires.net about upgrading the pump and putting in a fuel pressure gauge. Few extra pounds of pressure makes a world of difference.
Rebuild the regulator in the drivers side throttle bottle and reseal both of them before you put it all back together. Cut the main tube that supplies the drivers side throttle body and plumb in a fuel gauge so you can adjust it down to 15psi. Thats only a couple more than factory but very much worth it.
I'm a little ashamed to say that the pump can be changed through the fuel door. Yes its a PITA. I watched another friend of mine drop his tank in a matter of minutes and I wanted to cry. Drop the tank to change the pump.
Lots of other things to check, wires to distributor - rats like to eat them, cleaned off corrosion on distributor under control module, corrosion on fuse in battery box, dirty battery grounds.
Thanks for the reply, I have an 85 TPI pump, i just want to be sure thats what it is before i replace it. I have run down all the wires an they look fine. I feel like i am missing something.
any other ideas?
when ever there is a problem on a cross-fire ,you have to check the fuel pressure.the fuel pumps just are one of the weak links of the car.the next time it dies pull a plug wire and with a extra plug see if your getting spark .
Good Idea, that woul deliminate one problem, The 1st time this happend here are a couple things i noticed:
1. When i squirted starter fluid in the throttle body the car tried to fire up, may eliminate the spark issue.
2. there was nothing but very small drips coming from the injectors as i was cranking it.
Hope this helps, I am going to install the 85 pump I bought a while ago and drive the car just as i did the last 2 times it died and see if it does it again.
Might also try changing out the heat sensor (on the front of the engine) ... it may be going bad when getting up to temp ....
Sensors can be a bit of a problem as they get older .... just a thought

You should have a nice spray pattern, even when cranking. I am no expert, but sounds like something clogged along the way from the fuel pump, once you eliminate that question.
