Tach Issue
A while ago a wire that someone installed poorly dropped onto my exhaust and shorted out. The car stalled and the power windows didn't work. After I fixed the short the tach wasn't working. I assumed the short blew out the circuit board in the tach because I bypassed the tach filter and it still didn't work. But last week I was adjusting the timing and carburator and I attached my idle tach to the distributor. I didn't get a reading on my idle tach either. I hadn't used the idle tach for many years and I thought it was broken also. Then I hooked the idle tach up to my Jeep and it works. So my question is this: Is there anything in the distributor (1976 HEI) that can go wrong that will cause it to not put out a tach signal? As far as I remember, there are just some contacts that go from the coil to the pin where the tach filter connects. I don't see how the short could have affected them but the timing of the short and the tach breaking are suspicious.
