Default 1968 upgrading to a 4 point harness

Well i have the high horsepower motor, and the roll cage, now i want to get rid of the lap belts and go with a 4 point harness. This car is mainly going to be used on the street so i want to make sure that the 4 point harness is legal. I know that if there not dot approved then their not legal for street use but im pretty sure the 1968 lap belts arent dot approved either, so does it matter that im simply replacing the original lap belt with a lap belt that has two straps attached to it?
