I'm the original owner of a 78 Silver Anniversary that we sold back in 1981. I still have all of the original paperwork and have been trying to do a VIN search on the car to see if the car is still on the road, but all of the current search engines only provide VIN searches for 1981 cars and newer. Does anyone know how to get vehicle ownership records for these older vettes?
this forum and the ncrs forum might get you a little more exposure, the majority of vette owners don't know what the forums are. the c3 registry has less than 2% of the cars registered.. not likely to find anything there either. publish it here and the ncrs forum, look on the registry, browse the for sale sites for the next couple of years. maybe eventually you will get a hit. odds are not good though.
Start with the DMV where you sold the car. They may be able to tell you where the car went after you sold it. Be advised that, due to confidentiality laws, they may not be able to tell you owner names.
Most DMVs dont offer records older than 10 years although more and more wont give any title info at all these days. You have to inquire in the state it was registered.
The Google search is a good idea, although Id join NCRS and place an ad in the Driveline looking for that VIN.
