Default Steering Wheel

Has anyone replaced their stock steering wheel with a "wood" sport steering wheel like those you see on the roadsters? If so, care to share photos. I am thinking of replacing mine similar to what I had on my MG and vintage Bimmer.

Grant makes some Corvette steering wheels w/ leather 791 or wood 794 that are a direct bolt on.

I put the Grant black leather one on my Corvette a long time ago. It has polished slotted spokes & a very shallow dish which moves it closer to the dash. Nice, direct bolt on about 13 1/2". Ideal.

The grip is definitely 'thicker' than the original wheel, but not excessive - I would consider it comparable to most current production vehicles.

I purchased an adaptor about 8 years ago, I believe from Eckler's, but it wasn't that kit. The one I got included the textured parts - adaptor cylinder and the ring around the horn button - which sandwich the wheel. The horn button come from Grant.

My installation doesn't allow for the telescoping function, which I didn't use anyway. I replaced the "star screw" with two set screws, and locked it down in the position shown.

I had to drill & tap a small hole in the bottom of the adaptor for the ground wire, but I didn't have to modify any of the original components.

Ahh. nice. thanks.

Just trying to figure out if I can avoid spending $190 on a conversion kit. I don;t use telescope either. Not a lot of room in there..:-)

I don't recall the exact price, but I'm sure it wasn't nearly that much.
I'll try to find the part number this evening.

Found my invoice from Eckler's dated April 2003:

P/N A6995 Adapter, Steering Wheel, 1976
P/N A6996B Adapter Ring, Steer Whl-Black

So apparently the adapter and ring were sold separately. The invoice I have doesn't list the price, but I'm pretty sure they were less than $50 together at that time. IIRC, they were advertised for standard columns only.

However, I can't find them on Eckler's site now. You may have to give them a call or do a little digging to find them.

Where did you get it?

Any better pic? That pic is kind of dark. Is mahogany or something else?

Looks nice though!

It is mahogany concave not flat spokes. It will fit a TT steering with out the adaptor, you will just screw it instead of your leather one. My Vette had no TT so I had the Vega steering wheel. I got here in Montreal about 150$ . What I love is the feel of the wood. I will try go get you better pictures

I did this to mine for under $50, does not require any boss kit or adapter, screws directly on to existing column and does not interfere with tilt or tele. I love the feel of the wheel and it looks like it belongs in my opinion.

Cheers, Dennis.

I have to admit I never liked most of the aftermarket steering wheels for the C3. I went for the wood version of the original (even though it was never available back in the day).
