I have read numerous threads on the quality of Tom's differential and traccdog2 conversions. What they sell though is above and beyond what I require I believe, as I am not building a car to run down low in the 10's or lower.
We have supporting vendors who sell rebuilt differentials with different gearset options for roughly $900 or maybe a little more. What would be the quality of these units? Will these units hold up to power outputs of 425-500 HP?
Besides the units offered by certain supporting vendors, and the high dollar/high quality units from Tom's/Traccdog2 is there somebody else offering differentials that might be priced between these two?
I also see for sale by supporting vendors new Eaton Posi units for sale in the $6-700 range. I would ask what is your viewpoints on these units versus just rebuilding the stock unit, albeit with possibly upgraded discs/springs.
And finally last question if rebuilding the stock differential should the upgrade to hardened yokes be considered? Unsure of HP/Torque limits of the stock yokes. Sorry for so many questions, I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on the rear suspension rebuild/upgrade, and I want to take car of all potential issues back there while its all apart.
I have a 72 with a ZZ454 and a Tremec TKO600 transmission. I like t odrag race occassionally and run the car hard on the street. My car makes about 450 HP and 520 ft-lb at the crank. I snapped off the rebuilt axle in my differential, then sent it t oGary Ramadi.
Gary no longer posts here on CF, but you can see a lot of his old posts here. Once you read some of what he says, you will realize he is the "man" when it comes to rebuilding trailing arms, steering boxes, and differentials.
He is super nice, offers a lot of advice, and uses only the best parts.
he built me a "Super 10" differential and upgraded my axles to 30 spline and 31 spline with the 1350 u-joints. He used Tom's parts, but then hardened them, milled them, polished them, and blueprinted the whole assembly last year. He did my trailing arms this year.
The route I went was not cheap, but I don't worry about the differential now.
Do some research, read his posts. Find her over there and ask him directly. he wil lwalk you though the rebuild or do it for you.
Talk to traccdog, he does everything from mild stock builds to wild 1000hp rears. All the good things you had heard about his work is true, shoot him a pm/email/smoke signals/etc...

I believe that Toms is a predominant source of differential parts to all the rebuilders. He has commissioned major parts manufacturer's like Eatons, etc to run special production builds. I think that if you are buying really good differential parts from various vendors, they will all come from Tom's. If you want to buy 30(31) spline high strength alloy spindles from Eaton, you're going to have to order a large number of them. Toms as far as I know, is the only vendor to put down the large amount of money to order a large production run from Eaton. (For custom run, the first part might cost, say, $250,000, and the second part and subsequent part might cost $60. Pricing for repro parts is pretty speculative.) Tom's sells seven versions of the differential posi case unit. All at seven price ranges. His Number 1 version is just a factory supplied unit. I think it's very inexpensive. I ordered his Number seven version at close to $900.
Toms now sells parts. You now have to go to installers to put the parts together. CF vendors are available for this.
