Would like to see some pics of the console area of old (or new) C-3 race cars. I know some cars had a series of electrical switches mounted in the console area.
Here's the first draft, nothing fancy, just basic instruments. Two versions. The one with 3 gauges at top would have a series of "yet-undetermined" toggle switches. Not sure whether it would look better in raw aluminum, lightly glass beaded aluminum, or just painted flat black.
I would always want the Oil Pressure gauge in the most visible spot if it were a race car, but if it is just for a street car I guess it is not as important. It looks blocked from view by the shifter. Just a thought!
Rex I think either version looks good. The finish I would lean towards would be raw aluminum as it is probably more period correct (if that's the look you are after). If that is the look you're after do the "push in" fuses work or should they be the glass tube type? I'm not trying to be a smart a$$ but I know how you strive for authenticity.
I woud go black, maybe even look into powder coating as that would stand up a little better. The other thing is ergonomics...if you look at where you have the switch's in the first one, will you be able to reach them, strapped into the seat? When I did mine I couldn't reach (shifter into first was the furthest forward I could reach), so I put my switches down the side of the plate and used toggle switch extensions.
Thanks for everyone's input, I DO value your opinions, that's why I posted here. As of tonight, I am leaning toward the setup with the 3 gauges at the top, slightly rearranged in this photo with the oil pressure gauge moved to a more viewable position (thanks BJM for pointing that out). A push button starter switch would be located either between the oil pressure and water temp gauges or just to the left of the oil temp gauge. I'm just not sure about the 3 red toggle switches, I may just use plain toggle switches, maybe 3 or 4, one each for driving lights, fuel pump and cooling fans. In the first pic the shifter is in 1st gear and second pic it is in 4th gear (opening for shifter has not been fully finished yet). Even though I like the arrangement of toggle switches in the other layout, the Quickcar panel just seems a bit too modern looking. Actually, these SW gauges are old and the numbers are slightly yellowed, thus adding some patina. Also, this aluminum, when lightly glass beaded and then coated with a low gloss clear looks killer. What do you think? And yes, I am entirely open to suggestions.
I did not know these existed, but I had considered attempting to fabricate something like this for that very purpose. Thanks for pointing these out Jason!!
