Default Speedo question

I know at some point they changed the speedo to a 85 mph unit - am I understanding correctly that this happened in '81? Were the years prior to this all 160 mph units? AND, did they change this back at some point, or then go to the digital speedo in the C4 style cars?

Thank you in advance,
Adam

My 78 goes to 140. The speedometer - not the car LOL!

Change was made for the 1980 model year. Some late build 79s got them. All 81s and 82s had 85 mph speedos.

I was reading something the other night about C4s getting around the 85 max speedometer limit because they had digital displays indicating speed and not actual speedometers.

Ahh.. so it seems that they went to a 140 mph speedo in '78, then to a 85 mph one after that. I was looking at a '77 and it had the 160mph so what's where the question came from. Guess that makes the 140 a single year item?

You can always have the later speedos modified to show 140 or 165 for about 100 bucks.

68-77 had 160.

The dash & speedo changed in 78.

Thank you for clarifying that! As a car nut, I MUST know everything... I just have to!! lol

I love the detail stuff and to know as much about a car as I can. I have a long way to go with Vettes, but I'm trying

Now that is something I will keep in mind. I really like the 80 - 81's after looking at them. Prices are a little high for my budget, but you just never know what I might stumble on.
