I was at a body shop this past week picking up my '65 when I saw an '82 convertible.??? Obviously I said to the mechanic working there that someone had done a really good job of making the car into a convertible. He mentioned that it is an original factory convertible according to the family who owns it. Originally was a crossfire motor but had an aftermarket intake/carb set-up.Car had been damaged after a storm had knocked a tree down on it and the insurance CO. couldn't come up with a value because there are no records on this car. Anyone out there have any info?? I'm not sure the future of the car yet but am dying of curiousity as to what it might be worth. Odometer shows 36,xxx and it's all there!!!! Thanks mark............
There were no 82 convertibles from the factory. There were a bunch of cars converted over the years using parts from a 74 or 75 but nothing from the factory.
Yea I figured as much but the guy claims it's been in his family since 1984 and that his father bought from a GM executive. I was all over this car for hours waiting for my car and scrutinized it up and down. Now I'm no expert by any means but it looks really really good. Mechanic working on car has been into vettes for years and claims they made 30 or so for GM exec's. Like I said if it's "the only one in existence" It looks pretty good even with the damage to the front end that can be fixed for a few thousand dollars. I will see if he wants to sell it at a reasonable price. If anything you won't see another one while your out cruising the streets unless it's Easy Mike!!!!

The 81 convertible in the pic is not mine. The car was on eBay a couple of times a while back with a ridiculous claim by the seller of it being one of nine hand built by former St. Louis "convertible line" workers at a shop in Canada for GM executives who were retiring in 1982.
Not sure it ever sold for the asking price. It possibly could have sold if the seller had given up the original story and just called it a conversion.

There was a company that made 30 or so conversions, located in BC Canada I think, but they were not 'for GM executives' just regular peons like us. There's never any shortage of made up stories that attempt to substantiate a car being a 'one off' or 'secret factory special'.
Here's a company that will do a conversion for you, even if you're not a GM executive.
Well at least we're narrowing the numbers down!!!! HAHAHA..I'm not trying to get anyone worked up over this mystery "factory" car.. I would love to have this car one way or another. Factory or not. I'm very intrigued when I hear a "story" that seems to have a few lose ends now since I have posted here for any possible info. thanks Easy Mike. Car I'm interested in could look as good as the one in the pic you posted with a little TLC and some cash!!!
35 years ago, something like early summer 0f 76, I heard if you pressured a Chevrolet saleman to just put in a order for a 76 convertible it would have been built, something like a COPO. Now I heard nobody did and at the time nobody really thought a 76 Vert would be worth anymore than a 74 or 75. Now I don't know for a fact it was true or not. I had a 73 Vert at the time and didn't want a new Corvette anyway. But I thought that it could be worth some money some day if it was true, like in maybe 35 years.

Mechanic is wrong. It's too bad he's repeating a total fabrication.
I had one in the early 90s, featured in Corvette Fever. Just a beautiful car. Great lines with the 80-82 nose and tail. When people do them where they look 100% stock except for the conversion, they are just gorgeous. When they start making visual modifications to them (hoods, wheels, goofy colors) it blows the effect and just makes it look like just another custom.
I used to have a '57 'vette that I bought new. I special ordered it, and it came from the factory with an all steel body and a 454 with a supercharger, dual turbochargers and a 7 speed manual. That car was really fast! I never should have sold that one.
