They're not selling like "hotcakes" now and haven't for a year or two. C7 body style won't help them much if the sticker price brings tears to your eyes.
I was more thinking along the lines of the recent "retro" cars success
Mustang
Camaro
Challenger
(GTO excluded)
In all honesty, GM will be trying to attract a younger buyer, (not that they can afford it...),so the retro theme will not fly.
I like the idea though.

My .02: I think Ford got it right with the Mustang. Just by eye appeal, that car looks good. They sell.
I essentially like the Camaro. I do not like the price. I do not see these cars on the road during my daily commute.
Missed with the Challenger. Also not seeing them on the road, although the police interceptors are getting popular by defalut since the Crown Vic is gone.
GM shot themselves in the foot on the GTO. They did virtually no marketing with that car.

I see many Mustangs and Camaros here. Also, I am starting to see tons of Challengers, as well. I like the Challenger for what it is. A strong, comfortable touring car, that you can actually fit passangers into the rear seats.
As far as the GTO goes, it was a mstake to call that car a GTO. If they had marketed it is a mid- size, powerful modern day Vega, it may have done better.
I would like to see it. I have not been a fan with the open headlights and stubby rear end look. But I will say, that under the skin they are probably for the money(even though a tad pricey) that they are the best sports car built.

I'm a field tech so I do a bit of driving every day. I see dozens of Camaros and Challengers every single day during my travels. So much that the shock value has worn off and they're now dime-a-dozen.
SRT8 is the only rare model within that group.
No amount of marketing could have helped the GTO. There was nothing even remotely retro about a stretched and widened SUNFIRE. Even the interiors weren't that far off.
My first car was a used 10 year old Vega. A new retro Vega with a powerful V8 would be something I'd be in line to buy....provided it doesn't start to dissolve on the showroom floor like the originals.
While I'd love to see it, the "retro" design would probably end up a mishmash of old and new styling cues much like the Camaro which doesn't do it for me at all.
I'd also like to see a retro 57 BelAir, but again GM would probably screw that up as well
I think as long as they get the curves close and bring the price down enough so Bill Gates no longer has to finance it they would sell like crazy. just my $0.02
If somebody made a 70-72 body exactly like it was back then with todays engine,trany,brakes,etc... I would buy it in a heart beat! If anyone knows of anything like this please let me know..
GM needs to push the envelope with the Corvette. It should always be competitive with the foreign exotics, and I have no problem if I can never buy a new one off the showroom floor. It should be about GM having a flagship car (and to hell with the sales numbers) as long as they keep it 'reasonably' priced -- Out of the reach of the common man, but much cheaper than the competition with similar performance. IMO the Ford GT was an awesome car, but just a little too pricey.
The average price of a car in 2011 was $29,602 (after rebates & incentives http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/21/business/21auto.html) and what was the MSRP base price on a new C6? Under $49,000 right? Less after incentives? That's a 63% difference. (Hope my math is correct...) So if anything, the Corvette appears to becoming more affordable if anything.

I don't care for the current rear-end of the new Corvettes or the new Camaro. I would like to see a slightly modernized version of the C3 body on the C6 chassis.
I see the retro trend as a sign that modern car designers aren't car guys (or girls). They only way they can make a cool car is to steal an old design.
That being said, I do like the new Camaro. I looked into buying one but I have two kids and there is no way they could have squeezed into the back seat.
