Had a nasty blow out on the way home from a cars and coffee today. Thank god it didn't come apart and destroy my fender! No damage at all except for the tire. I should have know better than to drive on them they are old. Here's a lesson for everyone who thinks tires last a long time! Anyway anybody have some suggestions for new tires? I want white letters or maybe red lines? Thanks
I have the factory suggested size on my '73: 225/70/R15. I have BFG Radial TA tires. They are RWL - but I turned my around because I like black walls on my black car...
There's a number of good tires available for your car, though availability can be spotty at times.
I can only recommend those tires I've personal experience with...BFG Radial T/A, Dunlop Qualifier GT, Cooper Cobra (and the Pep Boys Futura GLE which is a Cobra made for Pep Boys). I've liked them all.
I've heard others like the Firestone Indy but the one brand people don't seem to like is Goodyear for some reason.
If you want redlines, you need to check with Diamondback Tires or Coker Tire. I've bought tires from both and have had no problems with either. Both sell quality tires.
Thanks for the replies. I was going about 60 mph it was on the highway. The tires came on the car, I would guess they are atleast 15 yrs old. Stupid of me I should have changed them a long time ago, this could have been a disaster. I think I will go with the BFG radials.
Mine are BFG T/As in 225/70 15 size. When I bought mine, I could only get blackwall in that size that were H rated. The RWL tires were S rated. I wanted the higher H rated tire because to me a tire rated for a higher speed is a better made tire. We can debate the logic or truth of that all night long, but that was my thinking at the time. Anyway, I don't know if they are still available.
Thanks for taking the time to start this thread and post the pictures. It is a sobering reminder to everyone how potentionally dangerous "old" tires can be.
Glad to see you just lost a tire and have no other damage. At 60 MPH things can go wrong very fast.
That's why I didn't make it to the C&C this morning. Took mine over to Dubs to discuss a paint job last Saturday and on the way home hit a nasty bump on Hwy. 74 and seperated the left front. BFG's on mine also.
Barely made it home. Sooo, now it sits waiting for new rubber and I started to strip the paint meantime.
Checked on some new tires from Cooper, 255-60's are gonna run 520 and change. The BFG's are over 600.
Maybe check out that new Firestone that is near you. Forget what the guys name is on here but he's the service mgr. I believe.
I ran bfg,s for many years but have switched to the indy firehawks. I think they are better in grip and wear. I judge this by how far i could do a power burnout with both tyres when they were new. the indys hook up alot better.
I also have the Firehawks. The traction is great and the ride is also very nice. My only gripe is the name, I just can not get into the Indy Firehawk. I would have much rather had "Firestone SS" Just my opinion. Al
