Default Antique Vehicle Plates

Does this statement from the IL secretary of state website indicate that I could use this plate?

"Historical License Plates, representing the model year, may be displayed on an antique vehicle, provided the owner has valid, current Antique Vehicle Plates. Plates and registration must be kept in the vehicle at all times."

If your Vette is registered in Illinois, wouldn't the antique plate need to be an old Illinois plate?

It doesn't say anything about what state plate can be used, it seems a little vague.

i'd bet that while very vague, it implies that the plate needs to be one legally registered originally registered within the state of illinois. that seem st be standard in all states that allow model year "substitute" antique plate use. i would give the div of motor vehicles a call to clarify it however.

I'm thinking that your plate will need to be from the state your car is registered in FWIW

I'm an expert on this, yes it's vague, BUT,

The historical plate they are talking about means an Illinois plate from your car year. So, a 1975 Illinois plate would be OK.

The ebay plate is considered a "novelty" as it was never meant to be used on a vehicle.

I have a 77 and have Illinois antique vehicle plates and sometimes display my old 77 plates.

Hope that helps,

Frank

I'm in New York State and have antique plates on my '72. NYS DMV says they have to be original NY plates from the year of your vehicle and they have to meet their approval for originality. You have to send them color pics of your plates. They have to be a closeup where the plate fills the whole picture. Supposedly, the plates can't be repainted, either. A real pain in the Azz but worth it when all was said and done. They also have to OK that no one else has that plate # on a newer issued plate.

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes. The statement is also in the info brochure for ordering vanity plates. I have the state issued AV plate on the rear and have a 1936 Illinois plate on the front of my '36 GMC streetrod and I keep the original plate and brochure under the seat just in case. Haven't been stopped in almost 5 years.
