Default Starter issues

Hi everyone, I started the 1974 coupe the other day and the starter stayed engaged. After several times I gave up, came back later and tried again. So Ireplaced the starter ( auto zone), same problem, So could it be ignition switch? Well I started to take apart the steering column, and before I got to the removable of the turn signals I tried the starter. Well It works fine. I am puzzeled. Also my horn doesn't work. T&T column

Did the old starter have any shims? Did the new starter come with shims? Do you get any grinding nose when the starter engages?
Assuming you checked the horn fuse, did you check with a voltmeter if you are getting current at the horns?

My 80 did this one time, I replace the starter solinoid only not the starter. Never has done it again ? It stayed engaged even after I pulled the keys out of the ignition, I had to un hook the battery to make it stop.

Thanks for responding. No shims on old starter or new, no grinding noise either. My concern is its starts fine now with the column apart. Will it mess up once it's together? will let you know when it's together. As for the horn haven't checked the relay yet. I don't see a horn fuse, could it be paired in with another circuit? The horn works when I ran a wire 12volts direct.
