I went with the crate engine (ZZ4) in my 71. Then put the numbers engine on a stand and never looked back. If you drive your car a lot it's the way to go. It really woke the beast up and has been bullet proof up to now. Let the next guy worry about it if it's important to them.

What engine did you have in your 71 before? Why did you decide to go with the 350 rather than a 383? I am sure that the ZZ4 performs better than, and is much more reliable than my 350, but I already have 350HP in my L46. I was thinking about a 383 crate or having a speed shop by me build me one. For the time being I am going to put the idea on hold and see if I can some day (hopefully sooner rather than later) buy a restomod '69-72 convertible and keep mine the way she stands.

When I did the car my goal was a dependable driver with spirited performance. At the time there was a lot of talk on the forum about problems with rebuilt crate engines folks were having. In my mind it was a crap shoot with the rebuilds. I talked with a lot of local folks about rebuilders in the area and there was always a negative.
The zz4 with 355hp and over 400 lbs of torque will still put brown spots in your shorts if you get to crazy.

Love them brown spots My car is lots of fun to drive but not a brown spot in your shots if you go crazy performer and I don't want to ride her hard. Good to know that the zz4 can get you going though - I don't need ridiculous HP either.

I didn't want the hassle of dealing with an engine builder. I'll let the () next owner decide what he wants to do.
