thanks for the help.
I can find a pic but the pace car cap is the same as the 78/79 cap.
Most that I've seen are NDH(i think) with a specific part number. They're also dated but the date isn't judged if you're looking at that.
Kinda rounded top with no 'handle'.
BUT, there's also a cap, I believe from Stant, that also carries the part number. It's a little flatter looking than the more "correct" NDH cap. This cap was on my low mile original white79.
I would imagine it was just a supply issue.
I notice pricewise the NDH ones bring better $$.
Doesn't seem to be much interest in this ebay one.
From ebay, not mine

From the NCRS 78/79 Judging Manual: "The gas cap is gold iridite plated, and has the letters NDH and the numbers 559346 stamped in semi-circles around an indentation in the center".
The best that I know, this was the factory OEM cap. There were some variations of this cap, such as the one without the "NDH" stamped in it, but I don't know that they were ever used for production by GM.
The 80 cap is similar. It was also gold, but it had 12 indentations around the circumference, to make it easier to grip. The 80 cap was made by Stant.
81-82's used a flat, off-white, plastic cap. These seem to come with 2 different types of Stant logo, in the center top of the cap. One just has a stylized "S" in the center of it, while the other has SMC (Stant Manufacturing Co) in a round logo, with the "C" forming a circle around the "SM".
The GM service replacement cap was black plastic, with white lettering.

We had a thread on the NCRS forum on the unleaded gas caps and I've collected and photographed a number from that period. There were a ton of different varieties made during the 75-81 period. The NDH is the broadcast code and a date code was stamped on the inside around the circumference of the cap. The NDH GM# 559346 was followed by Stant NDH GM# 22503147 in 1980 but was of similar appearance to the 1978-79 cap.
Here is the gas cap from VIN 900003, I believe a 41 mile Pace Car. I have seen many with a similar looking finish. They seemed to have gotten my golden with age.
