i am looking for a picture of an original gas cap from a 78 pace car. i don't believe there was a different one for the pace car, but met and spoke with someone who is quite convinced that there was a different one for the pace car as opposed to the rest of the 78 corvette line.

thanks for the help.

Just a quick post....
I can find a pic but the pace car cap is the same as the 78/79 cap.

Most that I've seen are NDH(i think) with a specific part number. They're also dated but the date isn't judged if you're looking at that.
Kinda rounded top with no 'handle'.

BUT, there's also a cap, I believe from Stant, that also carries the part number. It's a little flatter looking than the more "correct" NDH cap. This cap was on my low mile original white79.

I BELIEVE this is a Stant cap, also with the correct GM part number. This is what was on my white79. I can think of no reason it would have been changed over the years, but always a question. I've been meaning to ask an NCRS expert about the differences myself.
I would imagine it was just a supply issue.
I notice pricewise the NDH ones bring better $$.
Doesn't seem to be much interest in this ebay one.

From ebay, not mine

From the NCRS 78/79 Judging Manual: "The gas cap is gold iridite plated, and has the letters NDH and the numbers 559346 stamped in semi-circles around an indentation in the center".

The best that I know, this was the factory OEM cap. There were some variations of this cap, such as the one without the "NDH" stamped in it, but I don't know that they were ever used for production by GM.

The 80 cap is similar. It was also gold, but it had 12 indentations around the circumference, to make it easier to grip. The 80 cap was made by Stant.

81-82's used a flat, off-white, plastic cap. These seem to come with 2 different types of Stant logo, in the center top of the cap. One just has a stylized "S" in the center of it, while the other has SMC (Stant Manufacturing Co) in a round logo, with the "C" forming a circle around the "SM".

The GM service replacement cap was black plastic, with white lettering.

Thought so. Doesn't sound like GM to require a different gas cap for only 6502 cars.

Well I got in on this one late and agree with that written and having looked at dozens of low-mileage Pace Cars, all were shipped with the standard NDH cap. No reason at all that Chevy would have shipped with a "special edition" gas cap that gets no visibility.

We had a thread on the NCRS forum on the unleaded gas caps and I've collected and photographed a number from that period. There were a ton of different varieties made during the 75-81 period. The NDH is the broadcast code and a date code was stamped on the inside around the circumference of the cap. The NDH GM# 559346 was followed by Stant NDH GM# 22503147 in 1980 but was of similar appearance to the 1978-79 cap.

Here is the gas cap from VIN 900003, I believe a 41 mile Pace Car. I have seen many with a similar looking finish. They seemed to have gotten my golden with age.

1978 Stant NDH Gas Cap

What's your take on the ebay cap I linked to?
That's what I have on my 12K mile white79.
I can only assume it's been there since new.
It has the correct gm part no on it.

Yeah...saw that one on ebay and was tempted to pick it up. I have not seen that design installed on a 79 during an NCRS judging event...which doesn't mean they were not used. Remove it and look at the date code or shoot a picture and post. You'll see the embossed numbers in the plastic that surrounds the cap center. Numbers will be in the format 172 9 where 172 is the Julian code and 9 the year.

Numbers on the cap are 0029 which would(?) work for a May 79 production date.

OR.....0290 or 2900 which would be early or late 80meaning a replacement.

How can I determine the correct order?

The fact that there's a 9 helps

All caps I've seen have "miscellaneous" numbers that obfuscate (confuse) the date code. Here's a graphic of an 80 cap illustrating the date code (note the 5). What does yours look like...post or send a pic.

The numbers on this cap in question are not in the 'bottom' but evenly spread around the sides. I'll have to take another look.
I don't think it would photograph.
