Default 1968 Engine decode

I know this isnt the original engine for my car (1968 427/4 spd)

But I believe (from what others have told me) that is should be a 396 from an SS camaro?

Engine stamping:

TO513MW 18L342284

Casting number on the back:

3935440

I also saw what looked like "conv2" stamped on the back near the casting number - anybody know what that is?

396/325 from a '68 Camaro. Built May 13 in Tonawanda NY and installed in car S/N 342284 at the Van Nuys CA plant. Nice find.

Thanks! It doesn't do me much good. But I think my buddy is gonna put it in his '67 Camaro.

Why not? It's not a 427, but it is a big block. Besides, Joe Public can't tell just by looking.

Is there anyway to figure the first part of his VIN - Maybe I could find that car/owner?

Camaro AIMs or Camaro sites should be able to fill out the complete VIN for you. About the only thing you're missing was whether the original car was a coupe or a convertible. 134xx8L342284 might get you close. I think the model code for the Camaro was a 3. xx would be for the body style code.
