Default 73 for $7500???

Ok I know the answer to this question is subjective but I am going to ask it anyway. Like this wild woman you met in a bar last nite, I can not get this Corvette out of my mind, geez are Corvettes habit forming or what??? (lets see, take a BC or a powder???)

Anyway, what you think about a 73 with good body, good frame, paint ok, maybe 3/4 out of 10, believed to be original engine, but decked. 4sp orginal, rear end original, no a/c, new fiberglass front bumper, L48, needs interior work, runs great, lots of stuff replaced (brakes, tank, ect to get it operational) & NOM engine is ok with me if the price is right. Of course, who knows the miles, but the front rotors are riveted.

Thanks for any reactions.

As a comparison I'm looking at two different '73's here in AZ. Both are driver quality paint and interior. One is a 4spd the other an auto car - similar mileage of just over 100k - new calipers, front end bushings - rust free desert cars. The 4spd car drivetrain has not been touched except for valve guide seals, the auto car has 8,000 on a complete rebuild of the engine and trans. Both are priced at $10,500 OBO which seems high to me, but both owners expressed a willingness to deal on them to a point. If the owner of the car you are looking at is starting at $7,500 it would seem like he has a more realistic view of it's true value when compared to the cars I'm looking at.

I wasn't in a bar last night and did not meet any wild women, but without pics it's essentially complete guesswork on this 73. You've seen it; we haven't. If you want it, go get it.

No disrespect AdamMeh, but the two you are looking at might be in better shape than the $7500 car the OP has seen and could be worth their asking prices.

both of the examples from both posters seem to be a bit high to me.

None taken at all. I'm just learning about them myself so I'm always up for any advice You could be exactly right on the condition issue.

p.s. Sorry 20Mercury - I didn't mean to sidetrack your post at all. Just thought that since I had a couple of the same year in site it might help out.

No sidetrack at all, I thought every post from everybody was useful. Thanks to all!

Good luck on your search and I think it is useful to share pricing info. This is a buyers market, too many choices, too many good deals! Have fun! (half the fun is looking IMHO anyway)

I paid more for that for my 73 a few months ago but mine is a numbers convertible with 80k miles. I paid 13.5 but I call it 13 cause I sold about 500 worth of extras...

part of the problem in the search was to get the owner to let you drive his baby.when i would explain that my offer is 0 without a test drive the story changed.any offer was also contingent on us becoming very close friends, to the point that he would sign the car over to me as a gift, and i would enjoy the resulting tax savings.

I always get frustrated reading these threads where some poster or another always says whatever the price is that it's $2,000 too high, yada, yada, yada. In case nobody has noticed used cars in the last two years have gotten very expensive relatively and the Old Corvette market that you were used to for a while at ridiculously low prices isn't immune to that. The last few economically tough years have had people buying relatively good used cars because they were cheaper than new cars but still worked. Last time I looked there are less good used cars around since demand has snapped a greater % of them up and prices are higher. It has also allowed less new car discounting and no interest, low interest deals out there on them as well.

Everybody has to be their own negotiator and find what they are willing to pay but on this forum I'd think the smart thing to do is if you know that for you and have a range of asking prices and actual sales to deal with I'd listen to all the opinions here but I'd sure consider throwing the two lowest opinions out and the two highest opinions out and you might be in a better range.

If you say the asking price for some Vette is $10,000 someone will say $8,000 and inevitably there will be someone who says the market is $6,000. Have seen it many times and am suggesting you take all these opinions with a big grain of salt and do your own homework after you hear them. You are the one who is going to have to pay for it not us with the opinions.

Some people won't pay a "premium" for anything. For some the only way they can place the purchase in a changeable market is to try to insure they got the absolute best deal possible. I have always known pretty much what I want and have been willing to pay a little more for it. I am also willing to pay more to avoid time wasted and hassles. Even moreso when it comes to classic cars I prefer to do as much of the work as I can rather than paying someone. Not to mention I am also an impatient person and am not willing to wait months or years to obtain what I want. For some power is more important than looks. For some the model year is more important than color.....for some money and price is not an issue as much as condition and originality and others have price as a main concern.........and on ....and on...

All factors that weigh into the price you are willing to pay for a car wether its old or brand new. And none of them has much to do with actual worth.

Relax, Lance. Life's too short to sweat the small stuff. If this type of thread frustrates you, skip them.

Like with any project. What's your budget for the total car including expenses of resto. Just a guesstimation. Then substract the price of the initial cost for the car and see if that leaves you enough money to finish your project. If it does not then you need to look for a less expenssive initial cost, but again the less you pay in the beginning the more you have to spend dooing the resto so at the end it all evens out. . . yada yada yada, at the end the right thing is to get what you can afford and work your way up from there. I do not know if this helps or if I said anything you have not heard before but just my .2.

Do you enjoy doing restration or are you going to pay someone to do it. that makes a huge difference in the equation. if yuo are going to do it yourself buy a project car. if you are going to pay someone to do it I would go for a more complete car you save a ton of money at the end.. it will be more expenssive to start with but someone is taking the hit for all the time and money put in it already.

lumij3,your last sentence say's it all as far as a deal making monetary sense.the only thing it leaves out, that might make someone think the other way around,is the education you recieved by doing it yourself.also the fact you know you did it your way, right or wrong.
