Default jumper wire

my 68 has a orange fuseable type link that is attached to the harness located under the wiper motor,i think its a 20 gauge wire bridging the horn relay to the ammeter gauge, its about 5 inches long.it has soft spots at the ends of each side, but after removing some of the rubber from each end,the wire inside looks good, should i cut out the small orange wire, and butt connect and solder in a new piece. or just seal the ends with tape etc. i believe part of this wire goes to the starter solenoid, which i can see would make it hot, causing orange wire to somewhat melt at the rubber connections ends.but the wire seems ok,just the last inch of coating is very soft,,would you replace it,or reseal it. thanks a bunch, tom in cleveland.

one more thing,do you think this would contribute to a hot start problem, being that this wire is inline with the starter solenoid,,thanks again,,,tom

Can you post a picture of this Tom?

I haven't seen Roger post lately, he's the site wiring guru.

If you have a tester check for continuity, if it reads good I think you will be fine as is but listen to Roger if he does post and suggests something different.

If you want to save the wire and it is confirmed to be good, a piece of heat shrink tubing would make it like new.

first i want to say hello to you guys. dz,i get 13.06 volts with key off.so i guess thats good.i did try to shrink rap a wire i had laying around, but i had to slice it open to get it over the wire,as would be on the car, without cutting the wire,it wouldnt work,so i would have to seal it with some kind of high temp. adheasive.i havent gotten good enough to post pics yet,but while searching thru the search box i found a pic of the wire. i typed in - horn relay orange wire - and on the third page theres a thread by terry clark-fusible links- the first 3 pics. are the wire im talking about. of coarse i thank you guys for all the imput. hoping i can just seal the ends of the wire and be done with it.... also i understand theres a larger wire that is inline with the orange wire that goes down to the starter solenoid,,and im having a hot start issue,,im really starting to think my starter and solenoid need replaced,,maybe there the reason for the soft rubber ends on the orange wire...talk to ya later,,,,tom in cleveland
