Im going to pull the Muncie 4 speed tonight because of that blown extension bushing. Ive pulled and installed several engines but never dropped a transmission. I need a few pointers and tricks. The way I read it I raise the engine a bit, unbolt the tranny from the bell housing, rotate clockwise and pull it back....now I know nothing is ever this easy...
1) How much does it weigh?
2) What are the tricks to it all?
3) Manual says exhaust manifold front studs need to be removed....is that pipe to header or header to head?
Finally.....the big question.....would it be easier for me to just buy the 150 dollar tool and replace the bushing with the tranny in place and save myself the time and aggravation of dropping the entire thing? Im working on a limited budget, but I really dont want to over complicate this job...
The job is not too complicated as you've outlined. I'd drop the trans. You may/may not need to unbolt the exhaust at the manifold. Trans weighs about 80 lbs.

Missing a few things here.
You need to remove the driveshaft and the shifter.
I believe that you unbolt the front exhaust pipes from the manifold so you can push them out to the side to allow for more room to work. When I did mine, the pipes were not installed yet.
Pull the trans straight back while rotating, you don't want to let it droop while the input shaft is still engaged in the clutch.
Plug or tape up the output shaft area or you may end up with gear oil coming out as you move it around.
Get the car as high as you can so that when that puppy comes out and sits on your chest, you can manuever it around.
The cheapest and easiest is to take it to a shop that has the tool to remove the bushing and have them do it. My second choice would be to buy the tool then resell it when you're done with it. My last choice would be to remove the trans. You will spend almost as much on trans internals as the tool would cost you. Once it's apart you are going to want to replace the synchro rings and the rest of the seals and gaskets at the very least. I think the basic overhaul kit is about $125. You might also want to go a little further and look at the clutch. Replacing the release brg while the trans is out is always good insurance as well. Make sure you have lube on the pilot bushing before you put the trans back.
If you've never installed a trans before a word of caution. When trying to re-install it and get the splines lined up and the end of the input shaft into the pilot bushing, don't let the trans hang when your arms get tired. It warps the friction disc and makes for lousey clutch operation after that.
