I went out today to put the calipers on the front and noticed some grease on the floor under a tie rod end... There was also a little grease on the hub... When I pulled the grease cap off the hub, the grease around the inner bearing looked to be of the correct consistency... However, right around the grease cap, some of the grease was very watery looking... I used Mobile 1 synthetic on both, but not from the same tub/tube... I bought the two containers of grease from different places... Do I have an issue, or is this normal??
Really don't want to have to tear the hubs back down, re-grease the bearings and re-check run out, but this is the time to do it if I have a problem...
I rebuilt my trailing arms with Mobil 1 grease, and bought a tube to use to grease the front suspension. After a couple of weeks I noticed that my grease gun was leaking red fluid. I've kept an eye on the rear hubs and haven't seen any seepage, but I wish I'd known that Mobil 1 could separate like that--I never would've used it. That said, the general consensus is that Mobil 1 is good grease, and many people swear by it despite its propensity to separate.
When I rebuilt my front suspension and steering box last winter I used Royal Purple Ultra Peformance grease, and I'll be sticking with that. Not only was I impressed with the grease, but I've had a tube in my grease gun for 5 months and it hasn't leaked a drop.
I've used the Mobil 1 synthetic as well as Valvoline regular grease and it seems to do this for some reason. Hasn't been a concern or caused any issues.
Pretty normal from my experience. Doesn't matter what grease it is. Some liquid always seeps out. I pretty much use grease everyday at work as an aircraft mech, and as I've been rebuilding my 72, at home a lot lately. I even keep my grease gun in a 5 gal pail because inevitably it will leak a little liquid. Doesn't help that we live in warmer climates.
Thanks guys... It specifically says it is for wheel bearins and suspension... Your posts are re-assuring, and I guess I will sleep on it to decide if I will change out or let it fly...
Some seeping is to be expected. Reinstall cap, clean outside well with a degreaser then run a bead of silicone around the gap where cap contacts rotor. Smooth out to still leave some silicone in the space between cap and rotor. After it cures no more will be released and seals cap from moisture. I had to do this on my old truck to stop slinging of grease onto wheels. No need to redo. mike...

Thanks Mike... I need new caps as bubba beat on mine pretty well and there are some definite gaps...
