Default 5:55 rear end!

So there is a 5:55 differential for sale on eBay. Thinking this couldn't be correct, I inquired to the seller "surely you meant 3:55". He was insulted and told me 1969 corvettes had this as an option.

Really?

Never heard of a 5:55 ratio......especially in a 69 vette...( it would take off like a lumber truck.)....many sellers are, well...clueless...but hey didnt his ego trip make you laugh harder at him being a dolt?

Nope. Highest factory ratio was 4:56 only on L88, otherwise 4:11.

ask him to rotate the pinion until the side yokes complete one revolution. Count the number of turns. Would take him 30 seconds to find out the ratio.

It ain't no rocket science.

I came across a factory GM 5.14 gear set for the corvette. It must have came through GM performance. As it wasn't listed in the GM parts listing and never was an option.

I have a NOS set of Zoom 5.38 gears. For when I build a 10K RPM autocross motor.

4:56, 4:88, 5:14 ring & pinions were all available "over the counter", part numbers listed in the Corvette section of the (older) versions of the Chevy Power book.

Just imagine how small the pinion would have to be, minimal tooth contact also. Al

a 5.55 would be like never getting out of second gear.. no third or 4th... drivability wise...

I wrote the guy. He says he rotated the pinion and counted the axle rotations. Not sure how he could get accurate to the hundreths of a rotation that way, but he is sure about the ratio.

I'd buy it, lift that 'vette, and put on some 37" super swampers.

Unless someone misunderstood you are supposed to rotate the axle and count the pinion rotations.

Doesn't positraction read double on rotation? So a 5.55 would be half that or close to a 2.73.

No, the only thing it does is both sides of the pumpkin run in the same direction.

I have some 5:57's sitting for my Camaro 12 bolt...eventually will swap them in as I have a 302 that went through the eyes at the dragway at 9500....never heard of a gear set that low for a Corvette rear...

This is what I'm trying to say, (thanks Duke)
With one wheel stationary the driveshaft will turn half the revolutions of the axle ratio, so 2.73 x 2 = 5.46, so it looks like a 5.55, but be sure your count of driveshaft revolutions is very accurate...
