Default L-88 hood question

I have put on the L-88 hood on my 69, I was wondering about the L-88 air cleaner assembly, does anyone have this installed with their L-88 hood? If you do can you post some pics and tell me how this attaches to the hood and if it is worth getting, any info on it would be great.

Just type "L88 air cleaner" in Google images and see numerous pics.

ZIP, Corvette America, etc sells all the parts.

I think you are talking about the "fresh air chamber" that attaches to the hood, not the air cleaner, which attaches to the carb/throttle body.

The L-88 fresh air chamber is just bonded to the underside of the hood with adhesive. I guess some people put the L-88 hood on strictly for the look, but I wanted the look and functionality, so I installed the fresh air chamber as well. At first, I used the stock L-88 air cleaner assembly, but I found it lost 15 rwhp on the chassis dyno, so I came up with my own idea instead. I am using a 14" x 3" K&N filter mounted in the hood; they are very flexible, and it is easily manipulated into the air chamber. I used about 1" of the original style L-88 foam hood filter as a gasket to seal and hold it in place because the air chamber is about 1/2" to 3/4" too tall for a 3" filter.

Here is a closer picture, if you look closely you can see the piece I cut to fit in there on top of the K&N:

I changed to a custom 1 1/2" drop base air cleaner assembly, with a 1/2" aluminum bar I made as a hold down:

I am also using a 1" spacer under the throttle body to raise it up enough to have the air cleaner base seal meet the air chamber, which is something you have to do if you have a small block.

If you don't have the comfort level to install it to the underside of the hood, you can cheat and use it with the aircleaner base/filter/top. Just hold them all down with the wing nut (This is also a good way to test for fitment if you plan on bonding it to the hood).

I like that a lot. I put an Ecklers L88 hood on my BB 1972 and was trying to decide about the fresh air chamber. Who made the fresh air chamber you have?

The L88 type CAI fresh air chamber (the part bonded to the inside of the hood and holding the filter) is available from several aftermarket sources.

Thanks. I bought one from another source years ago and I never liked the quality or fit on my Ecklers hood so I never bonded it on. Looks like I'll pop for their air chamber as well.

I got my hood and air chamber from Gary Gruhala. A great guy and terrific price. I think he is still in business. Her is a pic of my set up using the stock L88 stuff.
