Thanks for the quick response. I am going to have to recheck my serial number. Because my registration shows 407524 and engine is 407527. I thought it was a different engine when I bought the car due to markings on air cleanerer cover but strange that the numbers would be that close.
Yes that would be strange having the vin number and engine stamp so close. Check your actual vin number on the drivers side A pillar. Compare it to everything. When I bought my 72 the title had an error, 1 digit had been transposed incorrectly during its previous title transfer. The AZ DMV office had to request the previous title from CA records and see what it read. Only took an hr to get it. In my case it was a clerical error, and a new title was issued with the correct VIN. Almost In AZ the office issues the title in a matter of minutes. The gal doing mine transposed an incorrect number too, we both caught it about the same time and had a laugh. She then issued another, this time no errors.

Even if the two numbers do checkout, it's not all that unusual to see errors like this from the factory. The guy stamping the engine VIN derivative had to manually change the digits for each car as it came by. If he forgot or was distracted it might have slipped right by.
