I have a 78 SA paintjob that will eventually need to be repainted. It's a 10 footer now (maybe 15).
Except for the engine (replaced by a PO and it wasn't an upgrade. It's a Targetmaster 350, made in Mexico.) the care is #s matching.
Would it look weird if instead of using the decals I had the body shop paint the pinstriping on? I think it would look nicer and be easier to maintain as far as washing and waxing. It would cost more to paint but hey, I am already puting money into the car to restore it. What's a couple more bucks.
Also, would it hurt the value of the car as it was originally decals and now I'm having it painted on?
Ive seen a couple painted and they dont look nearly as nice as the decals. Perhaps it was the workmanship, but it will be hard to get it to look as nice imo.

My original SAE pinstipes blew off at the local coin-op car wash many years ago, so I had them hand painted and very pleased with the results. IMHO, it's all down to workmanship, as good pinstriping is an art even if kept simple. Do bear in mind I don't care about originality.
I've had my SA since new and always figured if I ever had it painted I'd just have the stripes painted as well. Heck, once you paint it's not original any more so why worry about going with original tape stripes?
I've seen some with painted stripes and what bothers me about them isn't that they are painted but that they don't exactly match the tape, by that I mean the width isn't the same or the position isn't quite right, that sort of thing. So for me it would be important that whoever did the painting could do the stripes in the exact same places as the tape was.
That being said, my car is more like a 30 or maybe even a 50 footer as I've still not gotten around to having it painted.

So if the engine is not original to the car...than what makes it #s matching in your mind?

Sounds like you have a nice Corvette with a service replacement motor but all else original to the car. My view is when you depart from original, such as paint for decals, than to the informed buyer, he/she wonders what else deviates from original and this leaves margin for further bartering with your asking price. Yeah...it hurts your value...but that's my opinion.

I bought the graphics for my CE from Phoenix. My plan is to clear over them after the new paint is done and the decal are applied. They are expensive but are a high quality and an exact match. Paint and graphics an Xmas gift to myself.
