Up to that point, cars were a disposable item, because next year, there was something longer, lower, wider, and faster. All of a sudden, horsepower, at least according to DC and the insurance companies, became a dirty word, and the cars of that era were pretty gutless. This left people looking backward, at cars of the 70s as something to be bought up, restored, and preserved.
Back in the 70's I'm not sure if it was the collectability or the fact you could own a winter beater for maybe $200, more or less. So it was kind of heart breaking to see your ultra expensive sports car, $6000.00, being covered with 10 layers of salt and slush and the fact they really don't make for a great winter car. And you are right they weren't that collectable back then, as proof I drove a 67 BB though the snow, I think it was more the value of the car that kept most people from driving them in the Milwaukee area. Besides we never thought a fiberglass car would ever rust back then. But of course you had the few diehards like the Harley test riders who would be out in the slop. But they got free bikes or were even paid to go though the snow.

You could be absolutely correct, Frank, about 'retards' in your neck of the woods. On the other hand, perhaps the driver got caught off guard by the snow like I did once.

I worked the graveyard shift in a windowless factory. Sunday night at 11 pm was the start of the work week. December 1972, when weather forecasting was a far cry what it is today with satellites and doppler radar. No precipitation was called for. I normally drove a beater Chevy pickup, but I was chosen employee of the month and the perk that came with it was the #1 parking spot...all by itself at the front door. So I decided to take my '69.

Not a single person came round throughout the 8 hour shift saying it was snowing and blowing a bushel of fun! But to my surprise, there was 12" of fluffy white stuff blanketing the area come 7am. What to do, what to do?

Do I sit tight and wait for the snowplow to come through, spreading SALT as they plow, or blaze my own trail, risking that I get stuck in a drift. I chose the latter. And blaze I did! I was pleasantly surprised how good traction I was getting. But then I noticed the coolant temp getting higher and higher and I finally stopped to clear the packed snow from the radiator. I did that 3 more times until I finally completed the 15 mile trip to my garage. Whew!

And that was the one and only time during my 39 year ownership that it was driven in snow. I didn't plan on doing so; a freak storm came up and I got caught in it. Perhaps the same thing happened to the 'retard' in your pic?

Retarded ? I perfer the word crazy

So you've got to include me in that group !

As far as that woman you got in that photo, I say good for her. She grabbing life by the b*lls and giving it a good squeeze !

I take my car out A MINIUM 3 times over the winter for a good 2 hour tour. I wait until the highways are clean , but I certainly don't give a damn about the temp or if its snowing. Everyone should take out their toy a couple times over the winter. To soon we'll be 6' under ,and once you're there you'll be looking up wishing you had !

If you're in my area you'll be seeing me on the highway on Dec 31 and Jan 1st bringing in the NEW YEAR with some new engine mods !

Dart Pro 1 aluminium heads , a Dart intake and a Holley 4150 carb !

Don't be a wall flower guys - get up and dance !
Merry Christmas to all the 'retards' out there ,

Its going to be a rockin' 2012 !
