I am posting this in both the C2 and C3 forums to see if I can get some good feedback. I recently had a 327 put into my 64 and am having trouble finding a low profile breather to fit under the hood. I still have the stock hood but the 327 has the higer rise intake so nothing normal works. I guess I have 2 questions;
1- Any companies or products you would suggest?
2- Any tricks to try and determine how much clearance I have when the hood is shut? I can barely remember years ago someone actually placing foam or something on the carb so when the hood closed you could see how far down it was mashed. Not sure what material would work best and not "rebound" and give an inaccurate reading.
I really don't want to consider going with the stinger hood or changing to the lower intake until I have exhausted all other options.
I am adding a picture...just because people like pictures.

I think I have some putty but the clay is probably a lot easier to work with. It was also suggested on the C1/C2 forum to use a wad of aluminum foil to help gauge the thickness. I have a sick feeling that finding one to fit this set-up might be tricky. Thanks for the feedback!
These hoods flex a bit.....even if you do clay it and find out you have 1/4 inch clearance, be careful when you shut your hood....because if you get pissed one day and just let the hood go down on its own, you will flex that last little bit and spider web your paint.....ask me how I know....>8'(
All good advice. I am adding some more pictures for reference. Here is a level view of the carb without a breather to show how close it will be.

I don't have the stock base plate but since this is an Edelbrock carb not sure if it would have fit or not. I opened up and compared the set-up to my 1970 LT-1 and it looks like the biggest challenge is going to be to find a base plate (with a drop) that fits my carb. I noticed that the 70 had a pretty good drop so the air cleaner worked fine without a lot of hood clearance. The plate from the 1970 would not fit on this one so no luck in playing with it. Here is a pic of the aftermarket, no drop base plate air cleaner I grabbed at the local Autozone so I had a base to start with.

Here is the result with the top on the cleaner and the hood is gently lowered. As mentioned, I also need to be aware of some extra room needed for a normal drop.

I used the wadded up aluminum foil and tried to get an idea of how much room I had. It looks at best around 2" at the highest point above the barb base to have a chance to get it to work.

So in conclusion (without going the new hood or lower intake route), I need to find a dropped base plate fitting this Edelbrock that, when in place, does not rise more than 2" above the carb to have any chance at all. Here is my sanity check, am I thinking it our correctly? In the meantime I will try some more aggressive searches as suggested! Thanks for the input guys
Look at the Edelbrock 1207 and 1221. The bottom plate on both drop down a good bit. When I got mine it had a flat plate like the one you have. I needed to add a spacer below the carb and space was going to be tight (non-existant). I tried the 1207 but it was so much drop that it hit the choke housing. I could have fixed that with a hammer but I got the 1221 instead. I now could add the spacer and use the three inch element. I did go back to the 2 inch element for appearance and I have about 1.5 inches clearance.

I will look into those and see if they either fit or can fit with slight mods. I appreciate the feedback

I used a drop base air cleaner (think I still have the box) I got from a local speed shop and a lower 2" K & N filter for it to reduce height for my 68 L-79 as I have a high rise, older Edelbrock C-3 aluminum manifold with an Edelbrock 1406 carb. It worked. email me if you want the number and product name for the air cleaner and filter. Looks like a stock set up. Rich rwmnc@optonline.net
