I have a 76 and i need a new carb., What do you guys think is the best?? I was thinking a eddlebrock or a Holly, but had someone tell me a rochester. Just trying to get some input. Thanks
I ran a Edelbrock Performer for years on my 390 Ford and then put it on my 73 350 vette and it is still going strong. what do you have now and why do you need a new one.
i like this post me personally i hate the quadra junk from rochester i had it on a camaro it sucked hard had it on a monte carlo it sucked hard have it on my 79 vette and as soon as the vette is ready for the street i am taking my quadra junk an putting it in my dumpster an getting an edelbrock in it's place the performer intake and edelbrock 4 barrel carbs are by far in my opinion the greatest carb an intake set up for the money you can get them all day long for 50-100 bucks new in the box on craigslist what are everyone else's opinions ?

I would love to take your "quadra junk" off your hands.
Would you consider sending to Aus???
I will fix you up for postage.
Just a thought
90% of "carb" problems are actually ignition issues. Who diagnosed your issues?
If it takes a while to start after sitting, it is probably a leaking well plug. Easy to fix and a lot cheaper than a new carb.
BTW, the Edelbrock "Performer" carbs are just new Carter AFBs. GM dropped that design in the 1960's because they could not deliver power or economy. The only thing that the Edelbrock carbs "perform" at is their advertising campaign.
Any new carb will outperform a dirty old carb but for street use, it is hard to beat a well tuned Quadrajet.

Depends on what you want. For driveability, the QJet cannot be beat. For WOT use (drag racing, etc.) a Holley is a good choice. At WOT, they are all about the same, if properly tuned. If you want to spend some $$, perhaps one of those new MSD fuelie units would be fun. I run QJets on my 68 L36 Roadster and my 65 442.
The Quad isn`t a bad carb if it is set up right, the Performer is an old AFB design and I ran AFB`s back in the 60`s when I was a teenager and they worked great and still do. Holley`s are easy to work on and set up and give good results so I guess it`s all in what you want. You really have to match the carb to your engine, what size engine, what cam ,what gear, what trans and so on. Everything needs to compliment each other to have a really good setup.
I can't wait to get rid of my Quadrajet. I have to pump it 25 times or so to start it even though the accelerator pump gives a healthy squirt and the choke is closed. Then 5 or 10 seconds after it starts it chugs like the choke is too tight and I have to step on the gas and rev it to 2500 to get it to smooth out and hold it there for a few minutes. I checked the choke and it starts to open shortly after starting and is fully open a few minutes later. It chugs like its flooding even when its been shut off for a while but the motor is warm enough that the choke is still open. When fully warm it often idles slower and slower until it stalls, if I try to acclerate quickly the motor goes dead and then a second or two later it starts to accelerate normally.
I'm either going with fuel injection, or a holley which I've had before and runs like a dream compared to the quadra-junk.

Q jet also hands down...When you have one thats set up right by the right person you cant beat them....Id rather send my Qjet to be set up by the best rather than spend good money on new carb....

I installed a Q jet 750 Level 2 from Jet Performance on my 79 L-82 and it works great with improved off of idle acceleration. I personally don't like installing a square carb on a performer spread bore intake manifold.
I had a lot of problems with my Q-Jet until I rebuilt it with a kit. It now runs great and starts right up. The leaking wells, or plugs at the bottom of the carb was what was causing my hard start problems.
Love my Q-jet,rebuilt it seven years ago and works great.Every Spring after its winter sleep get into it pump it two times and it roars back to life.Besides nothing sounds better when you stomp on the loud pedal and the secondaries open up.
I've read documents from Lars Grimsrud and read Cliff Ruggles book on the quadrajet. I understand how the carb functions and wish I had the original carb for my 69 427.
If your qjet is an original application for your car, get the Ruggles book and read it several times. Then follow his instructions to rebuild what you have. If you have modified your engine, he has "recipes" of configuration to work with. Furthermore, he'll respond to questions regarding his book.
