Default 68 trim tag question

Looking at a 68 that looks like it has all of the components of a 68 anyway:
ignition key,
steering wheel
dash panel passenger,
seatbelt console
327
tan interior
door push button, ect, ect

but the trim tag has 420 interior and 983 paint.

Looks like 983 is British Green or Fathom Green for 68 and 69
but 420 is an interior code for saddle vinyl for 69/71 and 65/66/67 but not 68??

Question: did St Louis fudge on the end or beginning of year 68's? or more likely maybe this one is a collection of 68 & 69 parts? do not have a vin yet, maybe that is the key? or maybe you could special order an old interior number?

Much Thanks for all the folks on this forum and Merry Christmas to all!

I have seen at least 3 code 420 saddle 68's and each one was a code 983 British Green exterior. All appeared to be original, unmolested cars.

Am I right in thinking that 420 was seen only on cars built in the last 3-4 months of '68 production?

Mike, my recollection of the cars I saw is that they were all late cars. My memory escapes me as to just how late.

No. Saddle was available during the 68 model year but could have been late. Post the VIN when you get it.

According to the TIM&JG saddle was added during the production year, date uncertain. 421/saddle leather was also added.

Default Much thanks for all of the feedback!

another piece of data.

vin# is 420735 which was in May 1968 (if I read the black book correctly)

420 and 983 is the trim tag info (sorry no trim tag date yet)

So, I suppose basis the posts above this could be a saddle vinyl 1968 British Green even though 420 does not show up for 1968 in my stuff.

The rest of the Corvette "looks" like a 327 1968 except the console engine hp tag instead of the 68 flags below the 4sp. At some point I am not overly concerned, sorry I am not 100% NCRS!, but it was a concern to help me try to figure out how original it might be.

OK so the car was in the last 3 months of production. You don't have to apologize for not being an NCRS guy. If you can get the numbers off the stamp pad on the passenger side of the block just in front of and below the valve cover we can help with more info.

According to most sources I have seen, my Monaco Orange with Saddle vinyl interior is a bastard too, as only Black interior is listed as available with Orange exterior in '69. I guess every rule needs an exception.

Very late May, 1968. Last May VIN was 20928. #735 would have been within a day or two of final May production. The plant would have been closed on Thursday, May 30, 1968 for Memorial Day.

....yeah, it was a coupe w/350hp 4spd and a stunner too. I looked at it several times while it was there. Was gorgeous and very correct, as far as a '68 goes.

...I think the owner was asking like $36.9K for it and was in the process of finalizing his sale last time I looked at it.

...I've probably seen over a two dozen '68s with 420/421 Saddle Vinyl/Leather interiors over the years, but then I'm always checking out the '68s.

Fathom green with a saddle interior is one of my favorite combo's
I was looking for something different when I started my corvette quest.
IE... green,yellow,bronze
I came across safari yellow/blk interior which is a striking combo.
Car looks great goin' down the road
The green I would have been just as happy with if I had come across that color.
Hope you get the car
Marshal
