Default Odd Little Light

I was walking around my '81 after driving it, looking at the exhaust and noticed this little light was on. It really did not illuminate anything as there is nothing in front of it to light up. However the car was not running, the lights were off, and the key was off. I untwisted it to find a regular 194 bulb, pulled it out, and dove in to my AIM and wiring diagram. I cannot find any reference to it in any of my documentation. I just put the bulb back in and now I cannot get it to light up again. The bolts look as old as everything else on the car so I am assuming it was put on around the time it was bought. Has anyone seen something like this on there car? If so what is its purpose? The battery has never been dead on my car, even after sitting for 3 weeks so I doubt its staying on all the time. Any info is greatly appreciated.

I believe it was to help illuminate the spare tire tub area should you need to change a tire at night.

You guys are good! After flipping through my AIM again I found it on 12E. I remember seeing the detail of back up light switch on the adjacent page but guess I missed it on the other. Thanks guys!
