Default Looked at '71 coupe

Went looked at a '71 coupe, could have bought it for $7,000. It is a no-hit body, could see the bonding strips outline on all four fenders. Had the original motor. Loaded to the max, power windows, tilt/telescoping wheel, A/C, P/B, frame solid, suspension from front to back all rebuilt.

Now for the bad part, the bird cage was completely rotten at the windshield. I could see the rotten metal between the fender and door even before I opened the door! He knew about the rot but didn't think that it would matter, suggested I fill it with bondo!

Now for a question: the back center of the car between the left and right taillights there was a key-hold that fit the ignition key, any idea what it was used for?

Thanks

CJ

Factory alarm system.
I think the round door key (dorky) fits it and not the square ignition key.

Thanks qtlow, Never knew that before.

I would be driving a '71 today if it weren't for the rot. It was a really nice car!

The round key fits the alarm, but not the door. Ignition key opens the door. Round key would also work on the rear compartment lock.

The birdcage sounds a little bad and if it looks bad now wait until the glass is out and see what you really got. Gets worse if the rust goes behind the fender surround upper corners. Worst case could mean the nose and firewall have to come out for proper repair. No matter if there is a rust problem Bondo is not the answer. Just my two cents.

Hey ZR by the look of your avatar you are no stranger to work! A car like the one you described would diffidently give you something to do. Its sounds like you may have passed on the car.

yea, it was sad to see such a high option equipped with a no-hit body car with all that rust around the windshield.

I replaced the front clip and rear quarters on my 64 but to do that and remove the firewall and repair the birdcage, way too much for me.

So, I passed on the car, he asked to make an offer but I walked away.

Agree, sad indeed.

Maybe go back in a month and offer him $4200, likely worth that in parts and if cheap enough , somebody could get motivated to redo the bird cage

I thought Bondo was in the repair book for Mustangs!!!

Out of curiosity and seriously though, what do you think the 71 (I assume it has the base engine) might go for if advertised honestly as needing birdcage repair?
