Is it still possible to find a late model Chevy engine that will drop into a C3 ? I know all the first choice desirable engines will be gone.....but what would second choice be ? I get the chance to cruise a yard now and then and would like to know what to keep an eye out for.
So if I was looking at the carcass of a mid 90's caprice how would I know an LT1 ?
--Optispark distributor front of the engine behind waterpump
--Low rise intake/plenum with throttle body at the front.
--Center bolt valve covers (though I think other newer Gen-1 smallblocks use them too)
Should easily be able to find a few pics of this engine in the c4 section.
I think the sticker on the fan shroud may also say so; at the very least it will tell you if its a 305 or a 350
I never like to tell them what I have or what I pulled. Let them figure out how to ID and price it. If I see one I'll yank it and it suddenly and average 305.
Can you be more specific on what you are looking for? Do you just want a V8, specific HP range, want to deal with a computer, what kind of price range is your max, etc? That will help get you some more ideas from people. You might just want an engine and a 305 might work for you.
Lt1 is a good engine but you have to be careful. The optispark distributor was a weak point in it until I believe '96. They had a tendency not to be water tight and need to be replaced from shorting out. They were a little pricey to replace and could ruin your budget if you are trying to do this on a small budget.
Get into the later LS engines and they can be done but not just a drop in. There are sticky threads up top on them.

the opti is not as bad as everyone makes them out to be. sure if you soak them in water they will fail. but I am sure HEI does not like water too. the Lt1 was used in the F-body line from 92-97 and in the vette from 92-96. from 95-97 they used a vented opti that let water drain out. so they are a little better. but the LS motors are so much better then the old LT1s. just about any newer 2000 on up GM trucks have one. they just don't have the performance heads, cam and intake as the Vettes and F bodys. keep a eye for one.
