Default 76 Alarm questions

My baby has an alarm installed and the not so secret key port on the side, only i dont have the key and have never used it (2nd owner) can anyone tell me more about this othe than what the manual does, because "if installed" isnt very discriptive of trying to keep wiring and maintenece looking and working good, but its not just wiring i am asking about

Is this the factory alarm system, or aftermarket? Owner's manual tells you how to arm and disarm the factory system.

It's definately factory, activated by a circular key, i am looking for more techinical info about it and there is absolutely no info on restoration in aftermarket sites.

76 assembly instruction manual (AIM) shows the installation and lists original GM part numbers. Troubleshooting might be listed in the chassis service manual.

Are the key switches repairable? Mine doesn't work.

The alarm system seems to be fairly simply. There is the switch, horn, and plunger switches at each door and under the hood. The switch can be repaired and rekeyed by any good locksmith. It should be the same key as the door key. I have found that the system after this many years is tough to keep in service. Right now I have a short somewhere and haven't been able to locate it yet.

I believe that 76 is similar to my 75.

If you want a complete PDF write-up of instructions on how to troubleshoot and repair email me klsnyder2@***.net .

I posted this here some years back, but it's probably not in the archives anymore.

Just had my buddy's switch rekeyed last week. 18.20 at the local locksmith with 2 new keys.

Get a good wiring diagram if you have problems with the system. In his car the alarm relay is tied into a flasher behind the passangers seat.

The one on my 72 didn't work when I purchased the car, so I took it off the car and sprayed it with some contact cleaner till it dripped, ran the key back and forth several time then sprayed it again. It now works and that was 27 years ago.
