Default 75 Speed Ohmmeter Problem

I am helping my son do some work on his 75 to fix some problems. One issue he is having is the speedometer not working properly. The needle bounces up and down, making it pretty much useless. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to lubricate the cable? Can this be done from the end of the cable that hooks into the transmission, or does it have to be lubricated from the top side where it connects to the speedometer gauge? Thx

Lubricating from the top down would be the best way but also the most difficult. You can unclip the cable at the gauge and spray lube in (all of this has to be done laying upside-down under the dash). The problem could be the gauge itself so you may have to bite the bullet and remove the gauge cluster. The problem could also be in the gear that drives the cable. I have to say you have the most interesting spelling of speedometer that I have ever seen.

Thanks 72LS1Vette. I looked at the cable while laying upside down under the dash last weekend and it looks pretty tight back there. It appeared that I could get to the clip but I was worried that once I got it removed, I might not be able to get it back on. Any tricks to doing this? There is very little room back there. I was hoping that there would be some way to force lubricant from the bottom side. Also, what type of lubrication do you recommend? I'll check out the gear that drives the cable from the transmission end.

Regarding my spelling of "speedometer", I got a huge chuckle out of your note. I was typing my original post yesterday prior to rushing to my next meeting. I knew when I typed "speed Ohmmeter" it didnt look right but I didn't have time to spell check before running to my meeting. hahaha. Thanks for the laugh.
